In 1969, adidas France, first and foremost Horst Dassler, designed one of the true classics among sneakers. Inspired by the adidas Pro Model, a low-cut basketball shoe made of leather was created in France: the adidas Superstar. Still very popular these days, the shoes are also known as "Shellshoes,""Shelltoes," or "Shells." In its first year, the Superstar could only be admired on the feet of the best NBA basketball players. In those days, it was quite impossible to find the Superstar at American retail stores because in the United States the shoe was almost twice as expensive as the very popular Converse All-Star basketball shoe. The leather the shoe was built from and the design offered unique advantages, meaning that just a few years after the Superstar appeared on the basketball court for the first time, more than 75% of all NBA players were wearing it. To this day it is one of the most successful adidas shoes ever.
