A total of 155 games have been played between NBA teams and international teams. The first of those came exactly 42 years ago: an exhibition game played between Maccabi Tel Aviv and the Washington Bullets on September 7, 1978 in Tel Aviv, Israel.Exactly 3 months before that game, the Washington Bullets won Game 7 of the 1978 NBA Finals, defeating the Seattle SuperSonic 105-99 to clinch their first (and only) NBA Championship title. Team owner, Abe Pollin, decided to reward his players and their wives with a trip to Israel. The trip and the game were organized by Alan Sherman, vice president of Maccabi USA.After landing in Israel, the Bullets went to Jerusalem to visit the Old City, including the Western Wall and the Dome of the Rock. The next day they all met with Israeli President, Yitzhak Navon, and later had a special reception at the American embassy. The game against Maccabi wasn't their top priority, and Pollin even said it was almost an afterthought.Their rivals, Maccabi Tel Aviv, had won their first European Championship title in 1976-77, but failed to defend it the following season. They did, however, win 2 local titles: the Israeli League (their 9th consecutive title, a streak that would only end in the 1992-93 season) and the Israeli State Cup.
