In 1983, players and owners signed a historic agreement which introduced the concept of salary caps into professional sports.
Boston Celtics player Bob Cousy began organizing the union in 1954. At that time, the league had no health benefits, no pension plan, no minimum wage, and the average player salary was $8,000. per season. Over the next ten years, wages increased. The owners of NBA franchises finally recognized the NBPA in 1964, after being threatened by players not to play in the NBA All-Star Game.
