The adidas Pro Model was already being designed and manufactured in the 1960s. In its early days, the Pro Model was missing its unmistakable shelltoe, but once it has been added, the similarity to the adidas Superstar, whose design was actually inspired by the Pro Model, is clearly recognizable.
The shelltoe made it onto the Pro Model around 1970/71. From then on it got the nickname High-Top Shells and became the high twin brother of the Superstar. The adidas Pro Model was never as popular among the masses as the adidas Superstar, but it was quite popular with b-boys, even though it was offered exclusively as a leather high-top. On the basketball courts, however, it was hard to compete with the extremely comfortable adidas Top Ten. You could choose between the colorways gray on white, black on white, royal blue on white, red on white, orange on white, and green on white. The production of the Pro Model was ceased in 1987.
